Professional Industry Experience:

For approximately twenty years, during the 1980s and 1990s, I was a full-time freelance live session musician working for celebrity acts of the period in theatres; international Hotel and cabaret rooms; cruise liners, and U.K. holiday centres.

Teaching Philosophy:

Every student will have their own preferred learning style, specific musical interest and personal aspirations. It is my aim to inspire and nurture each student to achieve their objectives.

Teaching Achievements:

As a private guitar; bass; ukulele, and theory tutor, I have helped several students to gain their prerequisite grade 8 certificates enabling each to gain entry to university. Many of my earlier students are now professional themselves, with one currently on tour as lead guitarist in the Rock of Ages touring show. I cater for students of all ages, tailoring lesson plans in accordance with each learner’s personal musical interests. As well as my private teaching practice, I also teach Advanced Instrumental Studies: guitar and bass on the BA music course for the Academy of Music and Sound in Exeter (accredited by the University of Wolverhampton), and for a period of six years I was part of the BTEC music teaching team at South Devon College (SDC) in Torbay.

Graded Examinations:

Grades are available via ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool and RGT examination boards depending on the preferred learning styles and musical interests of each student. However, they are not compulsory – as many older students may prefer to just play for fun!

My Qualifications:

Together with my own Grade 8, I hold a 2:1 BSc (Hons) Open degree with the Open University (OU), this comprises modules in Music Technology; Composition and Performance, and Business modules based in the music industry. I have also completed the first third of a Post Graduate music qualification towards an MA in Music. During my time at SDC, I attained a Level 5 DTTLS City & Guilds teaching qualification, and a SOUD2005 Safeguarding Children and Young People qualification.

Due to my professional activity in schools and colleges, I always have a current Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate.

"I have been a guitar student with Steve Grimes for the past 4 years. During this time I have progressed from a novice guitar player to a confident semi professional musician. When I first started with Steve I was unfamiliar with music theory and written notation. However, Steve's intuitive teaching methods proved to work well as I have obtained excellent music theory qualifications because of his commitment and professionalism. On top of this I have learnt to sight read musical notation which has proven to be a crucial skill to an up and coming career in music. I could not have achieved this without Steve who's played a huge role in my evolution as a musician. Steve is a brilliant teacher and musical advisor. He has an abundance of professional playing experience as well as post graduate qualifications. I have recently obtained a distinction in my grade 7 guitar exam, I could not have achieved this without the excellent teaching and support of Steve Grimes for which I am very grateful."
